BPH Complications

Complications of an enlarged prostate are debilitating and quite often painful.

Other Complications Common with Enlarged Prostate Conditions

Urinary Tract Infection: This vital part of your body is the plumbing that helps your body process and discharge waste from your body’s water supply and bloodstream.  The plumbing is a system of tubes that helps your kidneys route bacteria filled water out of the body after filtering it thousands of times.  The bladder is the sterilizing holding tank for the urine.  The bladder is emptied when we urinate.  A urinary tract infect can occur when the flow process is interfered with because of restrictions in the tubing somewhere between the bladder and the end of the urethra (end of the penis) or between the kidneys and bladder.  The enlarged prostate can cause the bladder to become infected due to restriction s on the main drain tube.  The bacteria from urine that didn’t leave the body soon enough can enflame the urethra and bladder causing painful urination or swelling so bad that urination becomes blocked altogether.  Infections of the bladder can spread as far back as the kidneys themselves and infect them too.  Any urinary tract infections must be treated with anti-biotics as soon as possible to prevent the most sever complication of infecting the kidneys.

Bladder Stones. When urine is not completely discharged from the bladder it tends to stop moving.  The settling process can increase the sediment deposits of calcium in the bladder.  The minerals will adhere to the walls of the bladder and can weaken it with the irritation it causes.  The inflammation is painful.  If the crystals dislodge they can pass through the urethra unchecked and cause severe blockage and pain.  This condition requires immediate medical attention.

Accute Urinary Retention. This condition is brought on by a severely compromised bladder function, a compromised urethra or both.  The enlarged prostate can restrict the flow of urine out of the bladder so much that the bladder doesn’t empty fully causing bacteria build up in the containment area.  The bacterial build up alters the ph of the tissue leaving it vulnerable to disease and infection.  That disease and infectious climate can spread downward into the main urethral tissues and spread into the prostate, causing radical inflammation.  The infectious climate can spread back toward the kidneys infecting a large number of tubules within the kidneys.
